The Examined Life practice was born out of the ancient tradition of individuals walking alongside a trusted companion to practice the sacred art of self-examination and reflection that leads to change and growth. As a clinician, it has been my joy to work with individuals who are looking to better themselves with the realization that healthier leaders, lead to healthier communities. Often people come to this work at pivotal stages in life: stepping into adulthood, considering a job change, starting a family, taking on more responsibilities or leadership roles in their workplace, community, or faith setting, or simply out of a curiosity of wanting to understand why they do what they do and how they can practice doing it differently.
In our modern context, the Examined Life is experienced in the safety of a counseling relationship where the client and counselor take a deep dive into the life of the client to help them identify places of strength and needed growth to live and lead from a more integrated and whole self. Much like a student studying a subject, we will look at the entirety of the client’s life starting from birth to present day, their family of origin, their thoughts, feelings, beliefs about themselves and others, and the ways they handle conflict and relationships. Through this work we identify and sift out values, beliefs, and ways of being that no longer lead to health and growth while also looking towards the future to dream and set goals for what is ahead. Though this practice is beneficial for everyone it is geared toward individuals who are self-motivated and willing to put in the work, in and outside of session.
It is not always easy, but it is work worth doing, and you and those you lead are worth the work.
